An Application of Structural-Acoustic Analysis to Car Body Structure

In order to calculate efficiently the characteristics of car body vibration and the acoustic characteristic of the passenger compartment, a structural-acoustic analysis system, ‘CAD-B’, was developed. This system divides the body into three components - front body, main cabin and rear body. The characteristics of front and rear body vibration are expressed in modal parameters. The vibration characteristic throughout the car body is then calculated through the building block approach, while the main cabin remains in finite elements. A good agreement in eigen pairs was seen between this approach and the conventional finite element method. As for the passenger compartment, it is divided into finite elements and its eigen pairs are calculated. Then by linking body vibration with the acoustic characteristic of the passenger compartment, sound pressure in the passenger compartment is calculated.

The Turbocharged 2.8 Liter Engine for the Datsun 280ZX

Nissan’s new 2.8 liter in-line 6-cylinder turbocharged engine was developed for Che Datsun 280ZX in order to achieve higher performance and improved fuel economy. The Electronic Concentrated Engine Control System (ECCS), controlled by microprocessor, is provided for this 2.8 liter turbocharged engine. ECCS controls fuel injection, ignition timing, EGR rate and idling speed. It solved the problems related to power and fuel economy by optimizing the control parameters. Further, this system contains a barometric pressure compensator and a detonation controller; thus, the performance of this engine is efficient over a wide range of circumstances and fuel octane ratings. During the development of the engine, computer simulation was employed to predict engine performance and select turbocharger size, valve timing and other important factors.

Development of Door Guard Beams Utilizing Ultra High Strength Steel

Door guard beams have been developed through the utilization of ultra high strength steel (tensile strength>100 kg/mm2). At first, the sheet metal gauge was reduced in proportion to the strength of the ultra high strength without changing the shape of the beam section. This caused beam buckling and did not meet guard beam specifications. Analyzing this phenomena in accordance with the buckling theory of thin plates, a design criteria that makes effective use of the advantages of ultra high strength was developed. As a result, our newly designed small vehicle door guard beams are 20% lighter and 26% thinner than conventional ones. This makes it possible to reduce door thickness while increasing interior volume.

A Consideration of Vehicle's Door Shutting Performance

Many papers have mentioned, in passing, a phenomena that is known as “airtightness”, which is one factor that hinders automobile doors from closing. It also causes the eardrums of any passengers in the vehicle to be temporarily pressurized when the door is closed. However, few documents have considered this phenomena in detail. In this paper, we investigate the magnitude of “airtightness” as it affects ear pressure and examine its relationship to such factors as the volume of the passenger compartment, door's opening area and its inertial moment. Finally, we utilized estimation methods to predict its influence on the force required to close the door and the amount of the resultant air draft.

Deterioration of Heat Resistant Alloys for Automobile Emission Control Equipment

Various heat resistant alloys are being introduced for use in automobile emission equipment, such as thermal reactors and catalytic converters. For the past several years Japan has been developing alloys which emphasize oxidation resistance. Therefore, oxidation phenomena have been thoroughly researched and clarified. On the other hand, embrittlement, which is a marked deterioration similar to oxide deterioration, has not been studied sufficiently. The major subjects of investigation were the two forms of embrittlement in austenitic heat resistant alloys, caused by the precipitation of σ phase and the absorption of Nitrogen. Useful information was obtained from these results.

Potentiality of the Modification of Engine Combustion Rate for NOx Formation Control in the Premixed SI Engine

In order to study the potentiality of the modification of the combustion rate for NOx formation control in the spark ignition (SI) engine, the authors first developed a new mathematical model by assuming the stepped gas temperature gradient in the cylinder. The predicted results from this new mathematical model show good coincidence with the experimental data. Second, the authors discuss the effects of the modification of the combustion rate on NOx formation using the new mathematical model. It was concluded that NOx formation in the premixed SI engine would be essentially determined by the specific fuel consumption only, regardless of any modification of the engine combustion rate.

Analysis of Vibrational Modes of Vehicle Steering Mechanisms

An analysis was made of vibration phenomena in the steering system of a vehicle, when the front wheels have some amount of unbalance. The program included vehicle running tests and bench tests to ascertain some of the factors influencing vibration behavior. A mathematical model of the vibration system was simulated on a digital computer in as much detail as possible. The resultant understanding of the dynamics of the system as a whole led to an extensive theoretical analysis of selected key parameters.

On Fatigue Testing of Passenger Car Body Construction

Fatigue tests on a body in white have been made with torsional load and compared with previous results for assessments, where it was difficult to agree with proving ground tests in evaluating the life. Modifying the above mentioned fault, a programmed fatigue test method on the body in white is presented in this paper. The newly developed programmed fatigue test method is the simultaneous loading of the bouncing and torsional modes to a body in while by an electrohydraulic fatigue testing machine in accordance with the programmed sprung mass accelerations. Applying this method, the comparatively accurate assessment of proving ground test was made at the condition of the body in white, and the development period for body construction was shortened.
